This clients house backed on to the South Downs at Lewes. This meant their back garden had a 1 in 3 meter incline slope.
So CLDC designed with the client a courtyard space by cutting into the slope and taking 62 tonnes of soil out!
To keep the slope stable, a 1.5 meter retaining wall was built with a set of curved steps going up to an upper level. This also needed a small retaining wall built.
Kandla Gray Sandstone was used across the lower level creating a court yard feel.
The client was unsure if they wanted to break up the sandstone patio with brick. So the patio was laid leaving gaps to allow a dry run to be done an thus helping the client decide.
